Discussion has started regarding the operation of water processing plant at Sundarijal under Melamchi Drinking Water Project. The project along with Ministry of Water Supply, Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Development Board and Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) are discussing about the operation of the water processing plant while the tunnel under the project is being prepared for re-testing.
An agreement has been reached with the construction company to test and operate the water for the first three months after the water arrives at the site. During the construction of the processing center, it was agreed that the construction company would be responsible for the construction of the structure for a period of three months and in case of any problem.
The Melamchi treatment plant, which was completed last year, has not been used yet due to lack of water. Tunnels, headworks and two water treatment plants were constructed under the Melamchi Drinking Water Project. The capacity of both the processing centers is 85 million liters. One was built with financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the other with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The construction project of tunnels, headworks and processing centers and other infrastructures including pipes are being constructed by the project implementation directorate.
Along with these two processing centers, the construction of one more center will be started in the current fiscal year itself. The existing two centers will process 170 million liters of water coming from Melamchi River daily, according to the project. In the second phase, another structure will be needed to process additional 170 million liters of water coming from Yangri and Larkekhola, the project said. At the request of the ADB, preparations have been made to build a center for the second phase and the design has already been done.
