Current Status Of Health Insurance In Nepal: Almost 53 Lakh People Insured So Far

In the period of six years, the Health Insurance Board has expanded the health insurance service to 77 districts and 745 local levels in Nepal. The government is providing services to the insured from 441 service providers across the country. The social health security program run by the government is being implemented all over the country..

The Board has stated that the number of insured under the health insurance program has reached 53,04,270 or 20 percent so far. Out of this, the number of insured families is 15,08,514.

About 20,89,000 people or 40 percent of the total insured, have received the health care through insurance. So far, Rs 17 billion has been spent on health care under the health insurance program.

In the last six years, the government has collected Rs. 27 billion i.e.  Rs. 20.59 billion in grants and Rs. 6.56 billion in insurance premiums  under this program.

In order to receive health insurance service, one has to pay a premium of Rs 3,500 per annum for the family with up to 5 members. It provides medicines and treatment expenses up to Rs. 1 lakh per annum. If you have to insure more than five members of the family, you have to pay an additional Rs 700 per member. The family with more than 5 members will get coverage of Rs. 200,000 at the rate of Rs. 20,000 per member

The senior citizens who have reached the age of 70 are insured by the government. There is a provision to bear the treatment cost of Rs one lakh for a single senior citizen. Similarly, extremely poor people will receive a 100 percent discount on the premium amount. Likewise, families with severe disability, leprosy, HIV infected, tuberculosis (MDRTB) will also get a 100 percent discount.
