December 23, 2021 | Investopaper

Nepal Electricity Authority has approved an additional 150.5 MW load to the industrial sector. In addition, a study has been completed to provide an extra 111 MW load. NEA has been active in expanding supply to the industry with the target of increasing the peak demand to 2,000 MW by the end of the current fiscal year.

NEA is under pressure to expand power consumption after the 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project came into operation at full capacity.

The industrial sector is expected to consume an additional 360 MW on the basis of load approval, GIS completion, and ongoing demand. Most of the steel and cement industries are demanding more electricity.

NEA has approved the load to 10 industries from Shrawan to the end of Karthik. Likewise, it has completed Grid Impact Study (GIS) for seven industries.

Most of the approved loads include 60 MW at Hongsi Cement in Nawalparasi, 25 MW at Huaxin Cement in Dhading, and 12 MW at Swastik Rolling Mills. Similarly, NEA completed a GIS study of seven industries including 32 MW in Premier Steels, 28.2 MW in Jagdamba Steels, and 15 MW in Hulas Wire. Similarly, a GIS study is underway to provide 30 MW to Ghorahi Cement, 25 MW to Sarbottam Steels, and 25 MW to Laxmi Steels.

NEA has demanded applications for new and additional loads as per the policy of providing the required amount of electricity to the industry to increase the consumption of internally generated electricity.
