What To Study After SEE In Nepal?

June 20, 2020 | Investopaper

Each country conducts internal and external examinations to assess the achievements of students studying in different classes and levels of schooling. The internal examination is conducted by the school itself in each class while the external examination is conducted by a non-school body or independent body only at the end of a certain level. The internal examination assess the learning of the students to go to the upper class while the external examination evaluates the students and the overall education system. After such an external examination, students can take advantage of either the labor market and employment or higher education.

That is why external examination is also considered as an ‘exit point’ within the education system. In the past, the School Living Certificate Examination (SLC) was considered as the exit point of the education system in Nepal and the gateway to higher education, which is still the case today. However, now the name of this exam has been changed into ‘Secondary Education Examination’ (SEE).

Here we have listed the minimum standard the government has prescribed for the further study after SEE.

Which Subject To Choose After SEE?

Although the education system of Nepal has taken the education of class 11 and 12 as a single path, but in practice the concept of ‘faculty’ remains the same. That is, after the results of class 10, the process of enrolling students in groups like science, management, humanities, education is still the same today as was yesterday. Following the SEE results, schools advertise similarly for student admissions. The main question in this regard is the basis on which the student chooses the subject to be studied after the result of class 10. In this, the students and parents have the joint interest.

Almost all the students who get good grades in SEE choose to study various technical subjects in science. However,, students with low grades study other subjects (other than science) by force.

Which subject the student should study must be determined by the student’s interest and desire and grade rather than just the parent’s desire or the grade obtained by the student. If you want to get ‘good marks’ or ‘grades’ by studying the subject you want or are interested in, you can’t get the same benefits by getting ‘low marks’ or ‘grades’ by studying technical subjects like science.

There are spontaneous or compulsive conditions in the student’s desire to move towards science which should not be considered unnatural. Because many parents want their children to study science, the desire of the student is becoming secondary. It’s okay if your child wants to study science, but if not, then every parent should think.

Matter Of Choice

Psychologically, every person may have different abilities and different desires. Parents should help the students in choosing the subject by understanding their ability and desire. By forcing people with low abilities to study science or any other subject against their will, it is certain that both parents and children will be left in a state of mental distress.

After the SEE results, students need to be well-counseled in their choice of subject to study, which has not been done effectively. There are few government programs for this. Schools and parents themselves have to take the lead. Students who bring ‘good grades’ or ‘marks’ can study science, management, education, humanities or any other subject according to their interests and desires.

The system prescribed by the government as to which grade will be allowed to study which subject is only the minimum standard or basis required for studying any subject. It tells you how much you need to achieve in order to study any subject. However, this does not mean that students with ‘good grades’ or ‘marks’ should not come to study any subject. They can study any subject.

Why don’t students with ‘good grades’ or ‘marks’ want to study subjects other than technical subjects like science? The desire of the society, the understanding of the parents and the education system can be the cause. In the same way, if you can do well in any subject, you will not be able to explain the benefits that can be obtained from it later.
