The Government of Nepal has appointed Dr. Biswo Nath Poudel as the new Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the country’s central bank. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, as confirmed by Government Spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvishubba Gurung. With this appointment, Dr. Poudel becomes the 18th Governor of the institution.
Dr. Poudel’s appointment comes after a recommendation committee, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel, submitted a shortlist of three candidates for the position. The committee meeting held on Tuesday proposed the names of Biswo Nath Poudel, Nilam Dhungana Timilsina, and Dinesh Bhattarai as potential candidates for the governorship. Following the committee’s recommendation, the cabinet moved forward with the selection of Dr. Poudel as the next Governor.
As Governor, Dr. Poudel will play a crucial role in steering Nepal’s monetary policy, overseeing the country’s financial stability, and guiding the central bank’s strategic initiatives. His appointment follows a period of deliberation and public interest, as the selection process drew attention from both political circles and the legal community, with some candidates facing legal challenges and public scrutiny prior to the cabinet’s final decision.
Dr. Poudel’s background as an economist and his previous experience as a member of the National Planning Commission highlight his qualifications for the role. His leadership is expected to address ongoing challenges in Nepal’s financial sector, including inflation management, banking sector reforms, and fostering sustainable economic growth.
