36 MW Upper Balephi ‘A’ Hydroelectric Project Begins Commercial Electricity Production

The 36 MW Upper Balephi ‘A’ Hydropower Project, built in Jugal rural municipality of Sindhupalchowk has started commercial generation of electricity. After the successful testing, the 36 MW electricity been added to the national grid.
The power generated from the project is connected to Lamosanghu substation located at a distance of 22 kilometers from the power house. The power house of the project has 3 generation units with a capacity of 12 MW.
The construction of the project was started from 2074 BS. The project had set a target of generating electricity from Jestha 2078 BS. However, due to the lockdown imposed during the second wave of the Corona (Covid-19) epidemic, the construction was affected due to problems in transportation of construction materials and equipment and some workers and employees became infected with the Corona.
The cost of the 36-MW Upper Balephi ‘A’ hydroelectric project, which was initially estimated at Rs 6 billion, has risen to Rs 7 billion due to the delay in construction.
The funding for the project is done in the debt-equity ratio of 70:30. Balephi Hydropower Limited (BHL) is the developer of Upper Balephi ‘A’ HEP.
The project will generate 212.83 GWh electricity annually. Out of which, 38.62 GWh electricity will be produced in dry season and 174.21 GWh electricity will be generated in wet season.
