Non Performing Loans (NPL) of Banks Rises to 4.86 Percent

As of Ashwin’s end of the current fiscal year 2082/83 BS, the average Non Performing Loans (NPL) of 20 commercial banks has inclined to 4.86 percent as compared to 4.04 percent in the end of Ashwin, 2081 BS.

Only one bank has NPL lower than one percent. Likewise, 19 banks have non-performing loans between 1-8 percent.

Everest Bank (EBL) has the lowest NPL among the commercial banks with 0.74 percent. Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Limited (SCB) and Nepal SBI Bank (SBI) have NPL of 1.71 percent and 3.01 percent respectively.

On the other hand, Himalayan Bank Limited (HBL) and NIC Asia Bank Limited (NICA) have the highest NPL of 7.39 percent and 6.99 percent. Likewise, Kumari Bank Limited(KBL) has 6.98 percent in Non-Performing Loans.

    The figures reported by banks are not trustworthy. The real NPL, i.e. overdue 90+, is already at least 10% of the gross LP as of mid-July 2020. Moreover, even a greater share is masked in evergreening overdrafts – the bomb that will explode one day.
