Investment Modality Of Bheri-Babai Diversion Project Ready

The investment modality of Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Irrigation/Hydropower project is almost finalized. The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has decided on the investment modality in the company model under the People’s Hydropower Program.

Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Barshaman Pun Ananta convened a meeting of concerned stakeholders including Karnali Chief Minister Mahendra Bahadur Shahi to discuss the investment modality of the project.

The government will invest 51 percent in Bheri-Babai diversion multi-purpose project including 26 percent from the central government, 20 percent from the Karnali state government and 5 percent from the local government. Similarly, 29 percent investment will be from the general public, 10 percent from the people of Karnali and 10 percent from the residents of the project affected areas.

Earlier, only the Department of Irrigation under the Ministry of Irrigation had invested in the project. The ministry aims to provide irrigation facility to 51,000 hectares of land in Banke and Bardiya. The project will be constructed by returning 40 meters (per second) water of Bheri river to Babai. Out of that 46. 8 MW of electricity will be generated. The power generated from the Run of the River project will be around 150 MW.
