The much-awaited Nagdhunga-Naubise tunnel road project is set to start from today (Karthik 4, 2076). After laying the foundation stone, the construction of a 2.69 km road will begin. Previously, the construction of the project was estimated to begin in March. However, due to issues linked to land compensation and site clearance, the project was delayed.
The agreement was signed on 23rd of September with Hazama Ando Corporation, a Japanese firm, to complete the tunnel project. The Japanese firm will begin operation once the government lays the foundation stone on the project.
The tunnel project is estimated to complete by 2021, as per the plans of the Department of Roads.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is the development partner of the project. It has already finalized the technical and financial proposal evaluation of the Japanese contractor.
At an estimated total cost of 188.19 million dollars, the project will receive loan assistance of 141.41 million dollars from JICA. The government of Nepal will bear the remaining cost of the project.
Currently, to travel from Naubise to Nagdhunga, it takes almost 2 hours. With the completion of the tunnel project, the time will be reduced to about 7 minutes only.
