Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is planning to build a 100 MW pump storage plant using Kulekhani Dam in the Makwanpur district. The Department of Electricity Development has provided the survey license to NEA on Falgun 20, 2077 BS. It has applied to the department seeking permission for the survey on Poush 2, 2077 BS. The survey license is valid until Falgun 19, 2077 BS. The term can be extended up to a maximum of 5 years. Accordingly, NEA has to survey the project within 5 years at most and apply for a construction permit to the department.
The project will be constructed at Sisneri, 2 km below Kulekhani Dam. The project will be operated in the evening peak period for 4 hours. At that time, 100 MW of electricity will be generated by taking water from Kulekhani Dam. The water coming out of the turbine of the powerhouse will be collected by constructing another dam nearby. The project plans to send the water back to Kulekhani Dam by installing pumps and motors at night after the peak hour.
The construction of the project will be completed within two years of starting the construction. The estimated cost of the project is about Rs 8 billion. The investment for the project will be raised with the help of donors and loans.
