The government has decided to remove China Gezhouba Group Company Limited from the Budhigandaki Reservoir Hydropower Project. A cabinet meeting held in Baluwatar on Thursday decided that the project would be constructed by the government itself.

Earlier, the government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba had expelled Gezhouba from Budhigandaki in 2074 BS. However, the KP Sharma Oli-led government later decided to hand over the project to Gezhouba Group.

Budhigandaki, with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, has been plagued by repeated political disputes and government decisions. According to Ministry of Energy, about Rs. 35 billion has already been spent on Budhigandaki project for the distribution of compensation, displacement and rehabilitation.

Chairman of the CPN-Maoist Center Pushpa Kamal Dahal had decided to give Budhigandaki Project to Gezhouba when he was the Prime Minister for the second time. However, in 2074 BS, the government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba rejected it. Later, after the formation of majority government led by KP Sharma Oli, it was decided to give the project to Gezhouba again.

The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation had asked NEA Engineering Company, a subsidiary of Nepal Electricity Authority, to review the cost estimate of Budhigandaki Project. NEA Engineering Company has yet to submit the cost review report.
