The construction work of Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project has started. The 216 MW project is being constructed in Rasuwa with foreign investment.
Establishment of crusher plant and batching plant at the project site, testing of construction materials, construction of Bridge on Trishuli River for access road, cutting of trees for construction of dam and other structures, construction of access road etc. are in full swing. At present, 200 workers have been deployed at the project site.
Upper Trishuli-1 is the largest hydropower project to be constructed with foreign direct investment for domestic consumption. The Korean company Doosan Heavy Industries has won the contract for engineering, procurement and construction of the project.
The project is developed by Nepal Water and Energy Development Company with 50 percent stake owned Korea South-East Power Company (KOEN), 25 percent owned by Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation (KIND), and 15 percent owned by International Financial Corporation (IFC).
The company received the construction license for the project from the Department of electricity development. on Karthik 23, 2074 BS. The construction license has validity until Karthik 22, 2109 BS.
Upper Trishuli-1 Hydroelectric Project is a Run-of-River (ROR) type hydropower project with an installed capacity of 216 MW. It will generate electricity through Trishuli river. The project is located at Dhunche, Haku (Rasuwa). The project is expected to generate 1,456 GWh of electricity annually.
Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) will purchase the electricity generated from the project under a 30-year power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with NWEDC in January 2018.
About 10 percent share has been ensured for the locals affected by the project.
The project will be funded through 70 percent loan and 30 percent equity. The total estimated cost of the project is US$ 647.3 million (including construction period interest). Nine international financial institutions have agreed to provide loan financing of US$ 453.2 million. The remaining amount will be raised from equity.
The project will generate 1.53 billion units of energy annually. Out of the total annual energy generated from the project, 38.75 percent will be generated in dry season and 61.25 percent in rainy season. The generated energy will be transmitted to the national transmission system through the Trishuli-3B hub substation being constructed by the Nepal Electricity Authority.
The construction of the project is targeted to be completed by 2083 BS.
The generated electricity will be evacuated to the national grid through a 1.1km-long 220kV transmission line connecting the Chilime-Trishuli transmission line.
