29,886 Cooperatives Operating In Nepal | 88,309 People Employed

A government study has shown that cooperatives across the country are providing direct employment to about 88,000 people. The study report of the Department of Cooperatives has shown that 88,309 people have got direct employment in about 30,000 cooperatives.

 The cooperatives have collected about Rs 478 billion and invested Rs 426.26 billion. According to the new data, the total number of cooperatives has come down to 29,886. Earlier, the Department of Cooperatives had stated that the number of cooperatives in the country was 34,837.  At present, the department has collected new data in collaboration with all the seven states and 753 local governments. This is the first time that a unified statement of cooperatives has been prepared at the provincial level.

Out of the 29,886 primary cooperatives across the country, 125 are under the federal government, 6,002 under the state government and 23,759 under the local government. About 80 percent of the total cooperatives are under the local government. The majority of local governments do not have the policy and experience to regulate, supervise and coordinate these cooperatives. 

Similarly, there are about 7.307 millin members affiliated to the cooperatives. Out of the total members, 56 percent are female members and 44 percent are male members.
