Myagdi Becoming Hub of Hydropower Projects

Over 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from hydropower projects that are either operational or under development in Myagdi district. Currently, six hydropower plants in Myagdi produce a combined 171 MW including Ghlemadi Hydro (5 MW), Gharakhola (14 MW), Nilgiri River projects (38 MW and 71 MW cascades), and Mistri Khola (42 MW).

Several new projects are in the pipeline, with survey and construction permits granted for plants such as the 8 MW Upper Tirijakhola in Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality, 32 MW Nilgiri Khola in Annapurna Rural Municipality, and 5 MW Sano and Panthokhola projects in Raghuganga Rural Municipality. The Department has also approved surveys for the 9.83 MW Super Thulokhola and 5 MW Mangala Myagdi Cascade projects.

Applications for construction are underway for projects including 12.73 MW Upper Mudi Hydro, 30 MW Myagdi Khola A, 12.5 MW Myagdi Khola B, 1.86 MW Lower Rupse, and 9.71 MW Mudi Tirija Khola. In total, 24 hydropower projects are currently under construction in the district.

State-owned and private companies, including the 40 MW Rahughat Hydropower under Nepal Electricity Authority, are actively progressing with their work. Projects like Upper Myagdi Khola, Rupse Khola, Darbang Myagdi Khola, Rahughat Mangle, Rele Khola, and Kaligandaki Garja have secured permissions to begin physical construction.

According to the Department of Electricity Development, 718 MW of hydropower capacity is under construction in Myagdi. Additionally, applications for construction licenses cover 66.8 MW, while survey licenses have been issued for 15 MW. Companies have also applied for survey licenses for 45 MW of potential projects.
