Upper Chaku ‘A’ Hydropower Project (22.1 MW) Starts Commercial Production

The 22.2 MW Upper Chaku-A Hydropower Project, constructed in Bhotekoshi Village Municipality-4 and 5 of Sindhupalchowk, has started commercial production from Thursday. With this, eight megawatts of electricity has been added to the national transmission line. The project had started trial production on Baisakh 9, 2078 BS. Shiva Shree Hydropower Limited has developed the project and expects to run it at full capacity within Ashad.
The project is connected to the national transmission line through a sub-station of the Sunkoshi Hydropower Station owned by the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) at Lamosanghu at a distance of 22 km.
The construction of the project was started from Shrawan 30, 2069 BS with the target to complete by 2073 BS. The construction of the project was completed four years later than the scheduled time. Due to the delay, the project cost has reached Rs. 230 million per megawatt. 12 banks and financial institutions led by Citizen Bank Limited have invested Rs 3 billion in the project.
A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was signed between Shiva Shree Hydropower and Nepal Electricity Authority in 2067 BS. As per the agreement, NEA will pay Rs 7 per unit in dry season and Rs 4 per unit in rainy season.
The head of the project is 815 meters. The tunnel of the project is 3,300 meters long.
